You've heard of 5ks, 10ks, marathons and half-marathons, and maybe you've even heard of Obstacle Races and Spartan Runs and the Tough Mudder challenges. But have you heard of Zombie Runs?

It was only a matter of time, as zombies became a cultural icon outside of just films, books, and videogames, that people started to take thier zombie love onto the streets, and as running challenges began to become more and more profitable and popular, that someone would combine the too.

Zombie Runs are a relatively new phenomenon that I've seen popping up in major cities over the next few years (our home city of Calgary is home to one such Zombie Run called 'Zombie Survivor' kicking off at the end of July 2014) and it sounds like a lot of fun.

Basically combining a normal 5k or 10k race with elements of tag, game-playing, and obstacles, Zombie Runs see participants run a race filled with actors and volunteers playing the part of slow and fast zombies, whose goal is generally to tag a runner or steal a flag or object off of their belt. Similar to the Zombie weeks that have been held at a lot of major universities lately, hundreds to thousands of zombie lovers really get into the action with full costumes, prosthetics, make-up, and (occasionally) decent acting skills.

For those who can't make it to a zombie run or don't feel quite as social, zombie running apps are gaining popularity to as part of the gamification movement; you put these games on your cell as you run and they track your location and implicate you in some kind of story of scenario that you have to run to complete. Running can be hard sometimes, and things like this can give you that nice little extra push to eek out a few more minutes from your aching legs.

Dead Pixel's isn't the most amazing or innovative game of all time, but it's damn fun and it does perfectly what it set outs to do; namely, let you shoot zombies with a variety of weapons in a cute-yet-gory range of levels.

The basic game has you trying to make it a few dozen blocks to a Safezone, dodging and dealing death to hordes of zombies in your way. There are a bunch of weapons, at first following the usual handgun/shotgun/rifle set-up but there are far more interesting weapons at the higher difficulties and in the bonus campaigns.

You raid unlocked houses for weapons, ammo, and scrap, and buy new equipment and upgrades from stores that generally occur once or twice per level.

I honestly didn't expect to play this very long, but I ended up playing through to the end on my first time, and then coming back again the next day. Ammo is scarce, especially in the start, and the different weapon types use different kinds, so knowing when to use your handgun and when to use your shotgun becomes a constant juggling act. There isn't a lot of enemy variety but just enough to keep you on your toes, always trying to decide which gun would work best vs which ones you actually have ammo for. Zombies drop the coins you need to get more supplies, but they disappear pretty fast, so you often need to rush in and dance through the masses to get your reward for your kills; or carefully line them up and pull out your high-penetration rifle for a multiple head-shot.

It's this finely-tuned gameplay that makes Dead Pixels actually one of the better indie/small team zombie games I've ever played. Sure, there's a lot that could have been added to the game, but what is there is actually quite fun and scratches that arcade-zombie-shooter itch nicely.

My fingers are crossed. Our car battery broke down in the middle of nowhere in the Midwest, and no help is coming. A thief made off with our spare, and after waiting for hours and scavenging what scrap we could we've cobbled together enough to give us a sliver of a chance to fix it.

It's a chance we'll have to take. My best friend's been bitten, barely clinging to life, and if we don't get moving soon and find him some medkits he'll turn, and I'll have to shoot him before that can happen. We have a long way to go, but we've come too far and time is running out.

Organ Trail: The Director's Cut, made by game studio The Men Who Wear Many Hats, captures one aspect of the zombie apocalypse very well; namely, that it would be a hellish slog, full of endless tension and struggle, ending with certain violent death. (Or is that just life?)

It's the kind of game that you kind of dread playing, but then as soon as you're in it you can't escape. It moves slowly, and you hold your breathe every second waiting for the next horrible thing to happen.

A loving knock-off of Oregon Trail with Commodore 64 era graphics that are as perfect as they are crude and simple, Organ Trail really took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting much, but my first play-through lasted almost two hours of constant tension and unrelenting stress.

Gameplay, like in it's more educational predecessor, consists of naming a group of survivors and then slowly plodding along, from one side of the US to the other, encountering constant events and making sure to manage supplies and deal with illness. In Oregon Trail, you ford rivers and hunt game and trade supplies; In Organ Trail, you maneuver through zombie hordes and fight off bandits and biker gangs and try to keep your station wagon in working order.

It's relatively expansive; the range of weather events and upgrade options and encounters kept things fresh, and the shooting mechanics, which consist of you aiming in reverse, manage to keep excitement high as it's easy to fumble and miss when zombies (or zombie bears) are bearing down on you. I did wish for more variety in the scavenging missions, however; so much of the game depends on you scavenging often for money, food, and scrap, both to keep yourself alive and to trade, that it really starts to wear on you playing essentially the same mini-game over and over again. But in all honesty, it fits the theme; one of constant, unending, hellish struggle through a world gone mad. In that sense, I'd say it's one of the best and most interesting zombie games I've ever played.
I'm a sucker for a cool poster, and while zombie movies traditionally aren't all that well known on this particular front, every now and then one comes out that makes me drool over it like a brain hungry monster in a preschool at nap-time.

10. La Horde (The Horde)

The Horde isn't out yet, but it's hotly anticipated. The trailer looks awesome, and the french have really stepped up their horror game. It's too soon to know for sure, but La Horde looks good.\

(Note from 2014: This movie did come out, and it was awesome.)

9. Deadgirl

I admire it's balls- this is perhaps the single most unsubtle poster I have ever seen.
Anyone with half a brain knows exactly what this movie is going to be about.

Deadgirlis a delightedly deranged, very different zombie movie: which, like all great zombie movies, uses the zombies as a metaphor for something more real and relate-able.

8. Dawn of the Dead

Though a bit awkward looking from a design perspective, there's something about this poster that's just powerful, chilling, and cool. I like the zombie head so much I used it early designs of this website (if it's not still up there now.)

7. Bloodeaters

Bloodeaters, also known as Toxic Zombies, Blood Butchers, Forest of Fear, and probably a half dozen other titles. It's a pretty marginal movie- but this poster never fails to make me laugh. The tagline is so unbelievably silly, as is the art- I think this poster could serve as a pretty good visual definition for trying to understand what 'camp' is.

6. 28 Days Later
At the moment, I still haven't seen Pontypool- it keeps slipping through my clutches- but I really want too, especially after seeing this poster.

There are a handful of different posters that were used to Promote Shaun of the Dead, and all of them are very good. I think the style on this one is really cool, even if the other ones are probably truer to the spirit of the film.

Very similar to the Pontypool poster a few entries above, everything about this poster just bleeds cool. It actually took me a few seconds to figure out what it was- for the longest time I thought it was a guy charging forward on a motorcycle , blowing up a cloud behind him that was turning into zombies.
NO! NO!

Most zombie movies just straight up suck, and this is one of them.

Basically an even lamer knock-off of the already deritative, yet fun, Zombie Strippers, Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! has nothing going for it but a name that is a lot of fun to say out loud.

Seriously, there is absolutely nothing redeeming about this film. I'm not even going to waste my time talking about it. I wasted enough of my life watching it.

Zombie Driver is a refreshingly different take on the standard zombie genre, shifting the standard run-and-gun game play to a car, introducing physics, and widening the map to a whole city.

Throughout the Campaign mode, the player is tasked with completing certain objectives around the city- usually, rescuing people and bringing them back to the military base.

Power-ups scattered around the level heal you, give you bonuses, and refuel whatever weapon you might have equipped- there are several, but each vehicle can only mount one at a time.

Between missions you can upgrade your cars with various upgrades- speed, armor, ram-ability, as well as upgrading the strength, spread, and ammo count of your various weapons.

Luckily, for a game entitled Zombie Driver, they got the feeling of driving right. Zooming around the city, hand braking around corners and wiping out stacks of zombies is a lot of fun.

You can't just plow into a horde of zombies either- the resistance of their bodies will eventually slow you down, allowing them to crowd around you and rip your car to pieces.
Special zombies add a bit more variety to the proceedings- hulking tank zombies can knock your car clean apart, trash zombies hurl debris as your car as you pass by.

Zombie Driver is a solid, fun game, and a good change of pace from usual fare. It's not brilliant, but I'd say it's easily worth it's low price tag.
Honestly, I'm not much for bowling games, so the whole thing felt kinda meh to me, but for those of you who like them, and liike zombies in them, I'd say this is pretty much perfect.
It's got local and multiplayer support, a story mode which features different areas and increasing difficulty, and some pretty sweet ragdoll effects on the the bowled over zombies.
Probably the best thing about Zombie Bowl-O-Rama are the powerups, which come in two types- ones you use to help yourself, and ones you use to mess up your opponent.
The power-ups are pretty creative and fun- there are ones that make the zombies dance thriller (pictured above), ones that split your opponents ball down the middle or reverse his controls, ones that encase the shuffling zombies in ice- any you don't knock out in a set begin advancing towards you.
All in all, Zombie Bowl-O-Rama is pretty worth playing the demo if you like bowling games, but if they're not really your cup of tea, well, this game isn't going to convince you.MKLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12674407377116622222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487622324133692195.post-24483608810662521062010-03-22T17:57:00.000-07:002010-03-22T17:58:14.120-07:00Dance of the Dead - The Ironic Zombie Comedy done RIGHT

Dance of the Dead looks kinda stupid. I think that's fair to say.
You get the impression that's it going to be a mediocre teen comedy with a few zombies thrown in for good measure, or some kind of already doubly-derivative, simply by name, Shaun of the Dead for the tween crowd.
That would be a tragedy, though, because Dance of the Dead is actually a pretty decent movie, and a pretty awesome zombie movie.
With tongue planted so firmly in cheek it's practically poking out through the skin, Dance of the Dead leads off with all the genre conventions, and slyly subverts them just enough to keep us interested. There's the likable slacker, the bully who will end up as ally, the asshole teacher who is going to die in 5 seconds, the immaculate love interest, the friend who you know won't quite make it.
It also manages to play to the tropes of teen comedies pretty well, but clever writing and all around decent acting keep things moving along.
When the inevitable zombie outbreak occurs, the film really takes off. Regardless of what it's actual budget was ( I believe quite small) it manages to pull off that low-budget look while having inventive and squeal-inducing gore. They cut-away a lot, and obscure quite a bit, but it's all well done.
It flounders a bit in the climax, as many of these films do- but even that's not much of misstep, and this film is simply so much fun to watch, it more then makes up for it.
Simply put, in terms of zombie comedies, there aren't many better.
Zombie Tower Defense 4, the best of the aptly named Zombie Tower Defense series, is a bit of a mixed bag.
The presentation is pretty sub-par, and the first levels and looks around the game don't inspire much confidence. I myself almost moved on after a few levels.
However, it's surprisingly fun, and complex, and rewards a little bit of time spent with it with a solid, and challenging game. It's like the ugly chick with glasses in some teen romance- as soon as she takes them off you're like damn, she's hot!
I mean, there are so many Tower defense games on the internet, this is far from the absolute best.
But in terms of Zombie Tower Defense games...I've yet to see much in the way or real competition.
You can play Zombie Tower Defense 4 here.

You play a man trying to get to the coast for evacuation- you spend your days searching for other survivors to help you, more weapons, supplies to make the journey to other cities, and your nights defending yourself from the attacking horde.

The graphics are cool, the atmosphere is great, and this game is full of a lot of nice touches, which make it fun to play. It's also pretty tense, but in a good way. When you inevitably die, the first thing you'll want to do is try again.

If you like the Last Stand 2, another online zombie game with a similar style is Cursed Village, which you might also enjoy.
A comic introduces the story- you're some sort of semi-physic government agent sent in to defend a village from a zombie attack.
From there, you're introduced to the main mechanic- zombies run at you from the left, your shoot/stab/burn/destroy them before they reach you.
A whole host of weapons, upgrades, traps, and other survivors elevate this experience for it's 30 levels, and there are enough variety in the enemy zombie types to keep thing interesting.
Curse Village shares a lot of similarities with the also excellent Last Stand series, so that would be worth checking out if you enjoy this game.
You control 9 survivors, trapped/barricade inside a mall, who are forced to defend from an endless onslaught of zombies.
Luncheon of the Dead introduces the pretty cool Scrouge mechanic- the survivors need ammunition, med kits, and trash to build debris walls- and these are gathered in each of the three stores. So, you'll need to have some people defending and some people gathering supplies- not having enough of either could be disastrous.
Luncheon of the Dead also also adds the to the depth by featuring a whole ton of upgrades- everything from the strength of the barriers, to the spread of Molotov cocktails, to the speed at which survivors gather resources.
Of course, buying those upgrades require resources themselves- so balancing everything whilst under constant attack is a big part of the tension and fun of this game.
You can play it here.
The game claims to have over a million members, though it's hard to gauge how many of those are active. I've just started playing it, and as you have a limited number of actions you can do a day it's hard to really see what it's all about until some time has passed.
But it looks interesting, and I've heard good things.
I made a character named Dan Acroyd, a basic civilian, wandered around for a while, got into a brief scuffle with a zombie and failed pretty specularly at beating him with my golf club. As my 'action points' ran out, I tried to find a safe house to hide in, but got a bit lost and ended up taking shelter in a slightly barricaded, wrecked cinema.
I don't get more points till tomorrow, but my character is still where I left him- and he can get jumped by zombies. I think he'll defend himself as per his characteristics, but I'm not quite sure.
You can join (it takes all of half a minute) and start playing on their website, http://www.urbandead.com/.
It's a fairly standard top down shooter, but with a good variety of weapons and traps which force you to think strategically, or die.
Like all good zombie games, you most often get brought down by arrogance or a simple mistake- which leads to lots of replays to refine your strategy and prove yourself to...yourself. The online leaderboards also help.
Autumn War is played in two distinct stages.

You begin each mission on a top down strategic map where you order around your units, deal with upgrades and reinforcements, and implement your master battle plan.

When the zombies get close enough to engage your units, you switch to a close up, surprisingly sophisticated (for a flash game) tactical view. You don't have direct control, but can issue commands like hold, advance, and fire. Successfully using the right orders with the right squads and the right weapons can make a huge difference.
It's a fun, sophisticated flash game you could quite easily sink some time into.

A change of pace from most other other online zombie games, Dead Frontier : Outbreak 2 is an interactive story you take part in, kind of like a choose-your-own-adventure, but one where violent death is around very corner.
Without delving too much into the mechanics of the things, it's hard to say exactly how much your decisions influence how you make out, but you certainly get that feeling.

It's a fun and engaging way to spend a bit of time you have to kill. The story is well written, the voice acting is decent but skip-able, and both the art and the music serve pretty well at creating a palpable atmosphere. The game cunningly waits a few seconds to tell you if you've died- so you'll spend a tense few seconds waiting between important decisions to see if you've made.

Many of these kinds of games fall prey to a sort of completely arbitrary process- no matter what you do, or how you think it will work out, doing some things simply result in you dieing. Dead Fronter: Outbreak 2 avoids that pretty well. Everything feels logical, and when you die you generally see it as your fault.

You can play it here.

Probably the coolest feature of the Killing Floor is the ability to weld shut doors- which leads to some tense encounters as you flee through a decimated office building, sealing doors behind you and hearing the monsters tear them apart as you bolt out of the room.

You will see this screen a lot.

The Killing Floor can be quite hard- it has a lot of customizable factors, to be sure, so it doesn't have to be- but as long as you're not a little pansy bitch it's going to be difficult. It maybe doesn't demand the same level of co-op skill that the vaguely similar Left For Dead series does, but it is easy to get flanked and overhwhelmed in the Killing Floor, and that typically means it's all over.

There are a lot of nice touches in this game though. Weapons sounds great and feel good, blazing away with duel pistols shakes the screen and gives what're your doing a sense of real urgency, which isn't hard as it typically is.

There is a good variety of weapon and upgrades.

Between waves, you've got to find the Trader, who can supply you with the weapons, ammo, and armor, and let you change your class if desired. Solo play is a lot of fun and challenging enough to be rather addictive, while online play with friends or with the generally decent community is tactical and teamwork-oriented enough to actually work quite well.

Whilst not terribly deep, it makes up for this in simply being pretty fun to play, and pretty fun to watch. Nation Red goes overboard in dumping buckets of blood at the players feet, and the physics and animations of the flailing, dismembered zombies make setting up that perfect kill fairly rewarding.
There are several modes, all variations on a similar theme- you're in a stage of some sort, zombies of slightly varying types charge you, and you kill them with a variety of weapons and powerups that drop. These range from the standard- pistols, shotguns, uzi's- to the extreme- flame throwers, rocket launchers, super heavy machine guns- and then to the bizarre- jackhammers, steam guns.
Some of the weapons are lacking in variety but it's such a frantic and fast paced game you won't tend to have enough time to really notice.
The progression of difficulty is very solid, and there is fun to be had in occasionally trying your hand at the survival mode or just screwing around for a while.
It's not much more then a glorified flash game, but Nation Red stands out by being as fun and as violent as you always want these types of games to be, but they never are.
Everyday you must choose what you're going to do- either try and rack a certain amount of zombie kills, find and bring back supplies, or search for other survivors.
Finishing missions and cracking skulls earns you experience points, which you can spend on upgrades, some of which you can see below, and on an array of weapons, all with pretty awesome effects and sound.
You begin in a small space, earning cash by killing zombies and unlocking better weapons, more areas of the map, and various power ups.
Zombie Assault 2 ups the usual ante by featuring persistent upgrades provided you register, as well as having a number of different enemy types, nearly 20+ weapons, and just all around fun game play.
The weapons sound and feel good, and the overall execution of the game is just really solid- it's not revolutionary, but it's the best of it's type that I've played.
The player takes the form of some floating, mysterious force, roving over the planet and launching attacks on cities and towns all over the world. Attack a city brings up a small map, upon which all sorts of citizens, soldiers, rastafarians and secret agents are wandering aimlessly. The player begins the by initiating an infection somewhere on the map- the initial infected become zombies, who rampage around, eating and infecting the humans. By the end, either the humans will have wiped the floor with you, or your zombies will have taken over, reducing the town to rubble.
If that sounds simple, it's not. Well, not always. In the beginning and middle stages of the game timing and placing the initial explosion is quite the puzzle. Knowing when to use the other tools at your disposal- you can sling a few bombs to target particularly troublesome groups of soldiers, and there are a wealth of upgrades you can buy, as well as special zombies to hunt down and unlock- is what makes this game insanely addictive.
However, the longer you go on, the more powerful you become- the easier it gets, until you rarely have to do anything but watch the carnage for 30 seconds, move to the next city, and repeat.
That said, it's a lot of fun until then, and even dealing with that part for a while, I still felt compelled to beat the game...and then restart.
All in all, it's a perfect way to kill time for half an hour or so, and it's rather unique design, and tongue-in-cheek humour, make it a definite cut above most online games.
'Infectonator! World Dominator' can be played here. It was made by toge productions.
I rented it for the SNES when I was somewhere between six and eight, and I can still remember playing it pretty vividly, how cool everything about it was and how hard (at the time) it seemed to be.
I seriously probably died and had to repeat the first few levels so many times that, when I booted it up on an emulator a few months ago, I remembered pretty much everything about the first five levels.
You take the place of one of two teens (or both, in multiplayer) who are all that stand between the teeming hordes of zombies, werewolves, and b-movie monsters, and, well, your hapless neighbors.
Scattered around each level are a few of your cowering co-humans who've got to rescue before they get eaten up. Saving more earns you more points and a few extra lives, which can come quite in handy as this game is pretty hard.

'Zombies Ate My Neighbors' has become a cult classic in its own right, which isn't a surprise as it's full of clever little twists and nods and unexpected happenings. Weapons range from your standard water gun, to bazookas and silverware and even a weed whacker.
For bosses, you'll fight giant babies and possessed toys and all sorts of weirdness.
This game was actually re-released and slightly remastered for the Wii a little while ago, so if you have one it would be worth checking out, especially since it's co-op.
Because of it's popularity, it's also pretty easy to find a decent ROM of it.MKLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12674407377116622222noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487622324133692195.post-13608349108283395882010-02-26T01:54:00.000-08:002010-03-13T20:58:35.853-08:00Dead Rising

Dead Rising came out in 2006, after much drooling and anticipation from zombie fanboys everywhere. The set-up seemed perfect- nearly limitless zombies, a shopping mall full of things to beat them with and places to be swarmed by them, and...well, those were the big selling points.

Having played, and beat it, when it came out, I can safely say that in those two areas it delivers. Plunging into a throng of zombies and beating them down until they finally grab you never gets old, and neither does the myriad other ways to dispose of them.

Unfortunetly, this game is also maddeningly frustrating. To follow the convoluted, heavily Japanese plot, you're constantly running from point A to point B, with nary a second to catch your breath. Missing even one moment means you run risk of losing the entire plot thread- which, given the fact that you have to go to very specific places to save your game, and the game takes several hours, leads to a lot of reloading and backtracking.

That said, the plot is interesting, and what could have very well been a game about nothing ends up containing enough murky morality and insane encounters that you're always driven on, through the occasional frustration, to see what happens next.

Because of the open ended nature of the game- you are simply in the mall for seven days, and you choose whether to follow the plot, or rescue the other survivors, or become involved in different side-quests that might pop up without warning at certain time, or simply wander around killing things and exploring.

Frequently you'll find yourself choosing between a few different things and cursing the developers under your breath- though, I think that was a conscious choice to encourage multiple playthroughs.

Probably the single weirdest thing about this game is the protagonist, a swarthy, unlikeable photojournalist named Frank. He looks like a Jersey Shore reject and talks and acts like he's some sort of arrogant Western stereotype concocted by the Japanese as a commentary on the United States. Maybe you won't have a problem with him, but I just couldn't handle his face. He bothered me. It's good, then, that you mostly see his back.

In the end, Dead Rising is a lot of fun, but frequently maddening. I admire it's balls- it does not coddle the player, and you will die often, and you will have to run your ass off to do all the things you want to do- but there is a fine line between challenge and frustration. Dead Rising walks that line pretty well, and whenever it crosses over too far one, there is enough going on to keep you pulled in until it evens out.

Should have guessed though- pretty much everything is nowadays.)

With The Crazies opening in a few days, I thought I'd take another look at the trailer and see what sort of sweeping generalizations about the film I can make whilst still having enough time to actually see the film in question and remember doing this.

Even if I'm doing it drunk.

Here is the trailer:

So, I think we can safely say the movie isn't really about zombies. I actually didn't predict that, I just came across a spoiler.

But it seems pretty evident that there is some sort of something making people insane, some of whom will manifest it by staring straight ahead for hours and moaning, or pretending to be dead in a morgue so that people who LIKE zombie movies will come to theatres to watch this film. But let's be honest- most of those people were probably going to come anyway.

According to IMDB, the people start going insane after the water supply is contaminated by an unknown toxin. That leaves as the villain either terrorists, which would be a really silly plot point, or the government, which is the go-to antagonist for films such as these. Judging from that whole make-shift hospital setup we can probably assume that it's some sort of black-ops military government thing. If this movie is really super lame, that might even be the big twist.

My guess is, it'll start with the main character, who we'll call Sheriff, and his Wife, who we'll call Wife, waking up. There will be some sort of relationship building thing- maybe they lost a kid, maybe they really love each other, maybe their will be a gratuitous sex scene, maybe their relationship is on the rocks and this calamity is going to save it, who knows.

Then, he gets a phone call, goes to work, and wowie, this day is weird. They'll drop little hints that things are going batshit nuts, and it'll probably get sort of maddening waiting for the the actual attacks to begin, depending on how much of this film is filler or not. Prepare for lots of people to be staring straight ahead while everyone else's scratches their faces and wonders 'what the heck is going on around here, eh, doncha know?'

And then, it all goes to hell. Probably simultaneously the wife and the husband get attacked in their separate locations, eventually find their way to each other, begin to flee with other survivors (who have somehow avoided using the towns water supply. BOTTLED WATER FTW), lose a few people, and then have an accident, or a wreck.

Somehow, they become separated, and the wife is kidnapped by these government goons. He has to rescue her, along the way there is some slight social commentary on the out-on-control military-industrial-complex, they escape, depending on what kind of film it is he might die, or she might be infected with something and they can only share one last embrace before he has to kill her.

The last shot of the film is who ever is left alive reaching some sort of place they think is safe, only to have the camera linger over some tell-tale sign that the infection is spreading, or they've moved out of the proverbial frying pan and into the HOLY SHIT WE'RE FUCKED.

Yep, that's The Crazies. We'll just have to wait a few days to see how close my epic drunken vision is to reality.
MKLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12674407377116622222noreply@blogger.com0
